COVID-19 and the St. Louis convention

Aug. 30, 2022

JEA and NSPA announce COVID-19 vaccinations will no longer be required to attend the JEA/NSPA National High School Journalism Convention Nov. 10-13, 2022, in St. Louis.

Registration requirements

To attend this workshop as an attendee, speaker or vendor you must agree to a Code of Conduct and Liability Waiver. This form is included in the CrowdPass health screening portal.

No materials will be accepted on site.

We strongly encourage attendees to be vaccinated, but vaccinations are not mandatory to attend the fall convention. Masking will also be optional for all attendees.

We ask all attendees to monitor their own health, avoid endangering others and respect the safety measures employed by fellow attendees.

Each attendee must agree to and complete the Code of Conduct and Liability Waiver.

Step 1 Create a CrowdPass account through the link provided or scan the QR code on the instruction sheet.

Step 2 Follow the prompts and complete the necessary information: Registration information, Health Screening Form, Event Waiver and Release Claims agreement. Information submitted for attendees must match the information given at online registration. Legal name, phone number, email address and school name are collected for verification purposes.

Step 3 In October, advisers will be notified of student attendees who have not agreed to the Code of Conduct and Liability Waiver.

It will be the responsibility of participating groups to organize the required information. If attendees do not agree to follow the Code of Conduct and Liability Waiver attendance will be refused, and no refund will be provided.

All registration forms and information are managed only by convention registration officials, with strict adherence to privacy protocols.

Registration for the convention opens at noon Central Sept. 13, 2022. Registration closes Oct. 28. No on-site registration will be offered as part of our safety protocols.

Health-related registration refunds (may not apply to some Extras) available prior to Nov. 10.

Pandemic precautions

COVID-19 has been declared a worldwide pandemic by the World Health Organization. COVID-19 is reported to be extremely contagious. People reportedly can be infected and show no symptoms and still spread the disease.

Journalism Education Association and National Scholastic Press Association cannot prevent you from becoming exposed to, contracting or spreading COVID-19 while attending the JEA/NSPA National High School Journalism Convention and/or entering onto premises where JEA and NSPA events are held. It is not possible to constrain the presence of the disease. Therefore, if you choose to attend a convention organized by JEA and NSPA and enter premises where the convention is held, you may be exposing yourself to and/or increasing your risk of contracting or spreading COVID-19.

Based on Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is recommended attendees test for COVID-19 within 72 hours prior to traveling and convention attendance. Learn more about CDC travel guidelines.

Immediately prior to the convention, if you have been exposed to COVID-19, if you are in COVID-19-related isolation, or if you have COVID-19 symptoms, do not travel to the convention. Registration refunds (may not apply to some Extras) available prior to Nov. 10.

JEA and NSPA highly recommend attendees wear masks during group transportation to and from the convention, including bus and air travel. Please follow local guidelines as you adhere to your school district’s policies.

Masking is optional for all attendees at this time.

If a student or any attendee becomes ill or tests positive during the event, the school bringing the student is responsible for housing and all associated costs. JEA and NSPA will not be liable or responsible for those costs.

Organizers are following Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines and will continue to evaluate convention protocols as new updates are available for COVID-19 and monkeypox.

Thank you for helping do your part to participate in an in-person JEA/NSPA National High School Convention.

JEA and NSPA will continue to monitor the pandemic and monkeypox, including national, state and local guidelines and requirements.
